Q4: My fitness to drive – why is it important?

Eyesight Test

On your first lesson I will ask you to complete an eyesight test.
You must be able to read in good daylight, with glasses or contact lenses (if you wear them), a motor vehicle number plate from a distance of 20metres (about 5 car lengths).
If you are unable to read the number plate from this distance the lesson will be cancelled and you will not be able to drive.  You should then seek medical advice.
The same eyesight test will be asked of you by the examiner on your Practical Driving Test.  If you fail the read to number plate correctly, the Practical Test will be cancelled immediately and you will lose your fee.

Fitness to drive

You must be medically fit to drive.
Understand that some medicines should not be taken if you intend to drive.  Ensure you look at the pack instructions carefully

Alcohol

To drive with alcohol in your blood is extremely dangerous, and carries severe penalties (even on a provisional license) if you drive or attempt to drive whilst over the legal limit.
If you drink in the evening before you intend to drive the next morning, you might still be over the legal limit and unfit to drive.
You must not drive if your breath alcohol level is higher than 35µg/100ml

Drugs

Driving when under the influence of illegal drugs is an offence.
You must not take any of the drugs that are generally accepted as “banned substances” while driving or before you intend to drive.
Unlike alcohol (the effects of which last for about 24 hours), the effects of drugs can be unpredictable.  The direct effects of some drugs can last up to 72 hours.
